Excursions from Hotel Cokkinis

• Athens – The capital city of Greece is approximately less than one hour away. We recommend spending the entire day there to visit as many places as possible. Hop on-off buses are the best way to view the main sites and can take you all around Athens. You won’t want to miss out on visiting the Acropolis, Monastiraki Square, the Temple of Zeus and Syntagma Square. (Find the Hop on - Hop off bus timetable at reception).

• Salamina – Who would have thought that the closest island could be less than fourty five minutes away? Salamina has a variety of beautiful beaches to visit and is the perfect island to spend an entire day exploring. Don’t miss out on visiting the famous Faneromeni Monastery whilst you’re there. (Find the ferry timetable at reception).

• Corinth canal (Isthmos) – A quick twenty minutes away is the canal, which connects the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf. With rock walls, which rise ninety meters high and a width of only 21 meters at sea level, the canal is nowadays, only used by tourist cruise ships. (Ask at Reception for more details of the Canal Cruise).

• Loutraki – The seaside resort of Loutraki is half an hour away, just past the Corinth Canal. The town is best known for its vast springs and therapeutic spas. From there you can visit the Monastery of Osios Patapios and the Sanctuary of the Goddess Hera, which are located a few kilometers away; as well as the Loutraki Casino, which is one of the largest casinos in Europe.

• Heraion of Perachora – Situated in a small cove of the Corinthian gulf at the end of the Perachora peninsula, just past Loutraki, you will come across Heraion (the Sanctuary of the Goddess Hera) of Perachora. The unique plan of the site finds the ruins right next to sea creating a beautiful view from the top of the hill.

• Ancient Corinth – One of the oldest cities in Greece, Ancient Corinth is also very close to our hotel, just over thirty minutes away. Aside from visiting the museum, you can walk around the many ruins, including Corinth’s own Acropolis, Acrocorith, the Temple of Apollo and the Sanctuary of Asklepieion.

• Nemea – Another historical site that is just under an hour away is the city of Ancient Nemea. Here is where the pan-Helenic athletic games where held until 271 BC and the Temple of Zeus was constructed in 330 BC.

• Nafplio – An hour and half away you will come across the picturesque town of Nafplio. Back in the 19^th century, this seaport town was the capital city of Greece. There you can visit the fortress Palamidi as well as the water castle Bourtzi. (On the road to Nafplio you can also visit Epidaurus and Mycenae)

• Epidaurus – About an hour and a half away you will also find the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus: World-famous for its unparalleled acoustics and elegant aesthetics, the Theatre dates from the 4th century B.C. and is located inside the Asclepius Sanctuary, at the heart of the Argolis region. The magnificently built venue is dedicated to ancient Greek drama, hosting tragedies and comedies performed by Greek and international theatre groups alike, with English surtitles for international visitors. You could also attend the oldest performing art festival in Europe,  the Athens & Epidaurus Festival annually presents numerous theatre, dance, and music artists.

• Little Theatre of Ancient Epidaurus: Located at the port of Ancient Epidaurus, this 4th century B.C. theatre was built in honour of god Dionysus to host religious/worship ceremonies. Nowadays, it mainly hosts performances by emerging Greek and international artists with a more alternative take on ancient Greek drama. All performances come with English surtitles. 

• Mycenae – The birthplace of the Mycenaean civilization is less than an hour from Hotel Cokkinis. The impressive Lion’s Gate, Cyclopean Walls and the Royal Tombs are amongst many of the archaeological sites to view here.

• Delphi – A little further away, is the ancient sanctuary of Delphi. Famously known for its oracle, Pythia, who was consulted throughout the ancient classical world. Ancient Greeks considered Delphi to be the centre of the world and marked this point by the stone monument Omphalos (the Greek word for navel). It is nowadays, recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, having had a phenomenal influence in the ancient world.
